I have been bingeing a favorite show.. the Opal Hunters on Discovery On Demand. I was astonished when I heard the miners stop midsummer because the temps can get as high as 50C and it exceeds the ability of many diesel engines to cool themselves under load. The show is filmed in australia opal fields, and after watching a couple seasons, I have been able to turn off the subtitles. Many of the women seem to be heavily pierced and tattooed, with purple or pink hair, but they are good equipment operators and appear quite fit. The men seem generally jovial and are even sober occasionally. Currency for favors seems to revolve around "cartons" of beer, not clear what multiple a carton is, is there a standard "carton"? They are great storytellers, and most all of them seem to do quite well financially. The show has 10 or 11 seasons already. I wonder if it is even available in australia?
