#459739 RE: zab #459733

He's had the same argument since he started logging in on these boards.

This is the same guy that is a lifelong carpenter that stick frames houses. He complained that he was underpaid and overworked. Oh, and the illegal immigrants were all swarming over his job and taking over the country. (This goes back at least 5 years)

LOL When I told him that I didn't find it to be all that bad because I am a union carpenter working in and around Chicago, he went on the attack. He told me that all unions do is steal your money. When I pointed out that we do the exact opposite by holding the billionaire developers in check and force them to pay us an above average living wage with A-grade healthcare benefits for us and our families as long as we keep our hourly quotas, a pension and an annuity of over 40 different investment vehicles of our choosing, he paused.

Then he came back with the age old notion that all union guys are lazy and just get paid to sit in a bar all day while the buildings magically go up around us, even to go so far as to tell me that I was not a "real" carpenter, whatever that means. I tried to explain to him that buildings don't magically appear and people who are lazy are not tolerated. Then I kindly described that we could fit hundreds of his stick framed houses inside of some of the structures I've worked on and we all sweat the same. I guess using steel beams instead of toothpicks is a bridge to far.

I also tried to explain that's where I started and maybe not so fast now but I probably still could cut the framing for a roof faster than they could nail it together just by reading the blueprint and taking about 4 field measurements before the joists go in. Those days are lost, I agree. Now, houses come out on the back of flatbeds. All the walls, truss roofs and decking that just needs to be secured together and finished by a few good men and women. It's nothing like it used to be and never will be again. I almost think he didn't believe me after that.

Like you always say and Ferris Bueller once said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

someone has definitely missed it and now prefers to spend the rest of their days blaming others for their own existence... it has blossomed from carpentry into a tired, negative world view.
