Are the trees in the eucalyptus family? The blue eucalyptus (they might be called Tasmanian blue gum where you are and there is a Sydney blue gum) makes incredible firewood. The foliage burns like gasoline during drought times though, so it isn't planted much anymore. The leaves are incredible when placed on the stove in a sauna... totally clears the sinuses with the eucalyptus oil. (I am sort of spitballing as a guess as to what type of tree might be prolific where you are)
