To clarify my position, I am okay with research and development but I am not in favor of these efforts diverting funds and resources that delay or impede progress with bringing the mine to fruition. Parallel/simultaneous tracts are fine but only if they do not interfere with the core mission which is to mine critical metals. Monetary resources are scarce and they need to be apportioned in ways that facilitate the core mission, not be diverted towards secondary goals; albeit, worthwhile secondary goals.
