I thought I posted why Bard is Google's choice of name for its AI? Anyway I use it more than Chat; sometimes I feed both of them the same question. The ChatGPT registration was no obstacle for me. I just went there after being absent for a week or so, no sign in required.
Why is it called Bard?
The name "Bard" was chosen for Google's AI chatbot in reference to its creative and storytelling abilities. The word "bard" has a long history as a term for a poet, storyteller, or musician. In Celtic cultures, bards were professional story teller, verse-makers, music composers, oral historians and genealogists, employed by a patron to praise them or their ancestors. They were trained to remember and recite stories and poems, and they often played instruments to accompany their performances.
The name "Bard" is also a reference to the geeky roots of Google. In the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, bards are a type of character who is skilled in music, magic, and storytelling. They are often the ones who tell the stories of the party's adventures, and they can use their magic to inspire and heal their allies.
The name "Bard" is a fitting choice for Google's AI chatbot because it is a creative and storytelling tool. It can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way. It is still under development, but it has the potential to be a powerful tool for communication and creativity.
In addition to the Celtic and Dungeons & Dragons references, the name "Bard" may also be a nod to William Shakespeare, who is often referred to as "The Bard." Shakespeare was a master of language and storytelling, and his plays are still performed and enjoyed around the world today. The name "Bard" is a reminder that Google's AI chatbot is a tool that can be used to create stories and share knowledge, just like Shakespeare did.
