1984 was about government suppression and thought control. Private websites are not government. Although recent events in federal court and elsewhere have exposed the government leaning too far into suppressing protected speech on the interwebs in violation of their constitutional limits.

That book was written in 1949 and in no way could Orwell have predicted what social media has wrought in the 21st century. Granted that was the beginning of The Red Scare initiated by a deranged Senator and the government finally came to its senses.

So now the government has to deal with something more concrete as evidenced by recent events which quite frankly should be a concern to everyone. Civil disobedience is one thing. Insurrection and storming the Capitol is entirely different. Do you actually want to defend the dark web and say the government should just look the other way.

I am a strong advocate for free speech as we have discussed. But social media wants to hide behind Section 230 and claim it's not our problem. Orwell could have never predicted this.
