Yes, know that one well.. did a essay on East Timor way way way back in the day. Words like frenzy and fever were some authors explanation for the seemingly inexplicable.
[.. kind of off topic/from reading ahead but maybe not - liked your simple comment "no game theory or psychology, just an informed opinion backed by facts and links" (I'm paraphrazin ;). Stock guy did have a point albeit misplaced - qualitative difference for election campaigns]

From ur link; The killings are skipped over in most Indonesian history textbooks and have received little attention by Indonesians due to their suppression under the Suharto regime, as well as receiving little international attention. The search for satisfactory explanations for the scale and frenzy of the violence has challenged scholars from all ideological perspectives. The possibility of returning to similar upheavals is cited as a factor in the "New Order" administration's political conservatism and tight control of the political system. Vigilance and stigma against a perceived communist threat remained a hallmark of Suharto's doctrine, and it is still in force even today.[26]

Despite a consensus at the highest levels of the U.S. and British governments that it would be necessary "to liquidate Sukarno", as related in a CIA memorandum from 1962,[27] and the existence of extensive contacts between anti-communist army officers and the U.S. military establishment – training of over 1,200 officers, "including senior military figures", and providing weapons and economic assistance[28][29] – the CIA denied active involvement in the killings. Declassified U.S. documents in 2017 revealed that the U.S. government had detailed knowledge of the mass killings from the beginning and was supportive of the actions of the Indonesian Army.[9][21][30] U.S. complicity in the killings, which included providing extensive lists of PKI officials to Indonesian death squads,[36] has previously been established by historians and journalists.[21][25]

A top-secret CIA report from 1968 stated that the massacres "rank as one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century, along with the Soviet purges of the 1930s, the Nazi mass murders during the Second World War, and the Maoist bloodbath of the early 1950s."[37][38]

The Powers That Be always need their boogey men, whether little green men, commie pinko socialist men, .. to keep the voting public ignorant and voting - to keep all the marbles for themselves I suppose.

White propaganda
White propaganda is propaganda that does not hide its origin or nature. It is the most common type of propaganda and is distinguished from black propaganda which disguises its origin to discredit an opposing cause. It typically uses standard public relations techniques and one-sided presentation of an argument. Wikipedia

I got a kick outta this in the comment section from the post you are replying to:

Wandering around the jungle of Belize looking at crazy birds and Mayan ruins is good for autonomic nervous system homeostasis.

Turning a corner on a trail in the jungle to see a puma staring at you is not good for homeostasis… or your undies….

Know what else is good for autonomic nervous system homeostasis? Thoughtful dry needling combined with joint manipulation!....

Lol, my go to is a sexy girl giving a deep tissue massage.. or the wife.. or sinking a 40 foot putt.. or pub beers.. or undressin' arrogant hypocrites with their own dumb words.. or when the backhoe is in a happy place (minimal leaks).. or the evening sounds of the wood thrush watching a bobcat silently stroll by wearing no undies [ever; dumb practice similar to the earlier 'dumb words' (in a poetic sense ;)].

Large-scale killings and civil unrest primarily targeting members of the Communist Party (PKI) were carried out in Indonesia from 1965 to 1966. Other affected groups included alleged communist sympathisers, Gerwani women, ethnic Javanese Abangan,[1] ethnic Chinese, atheists, so-called "unbelievers", and alleged leftists in general.

It is estimated that between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed during the main period of violence from October 1965 to March 1966.

Sounds.......................dangerous.

Missing wiki link .. The fear of communism was one of the main factors in the Vietnam

By the conclusion of the United States's involvement in 1973, over 3.1 million Americans had been stationed in Vietnam.[2][3]

The U.S. involvement in Vietnam began due to a combination of factors: the U.S. war with Japan in the Pacific, domestic pressure to act against communism after the communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong's pledge in 1950 to support the Viet Minh guerrilla forces in the First Indochina War against France's colonial rule, and the indecisive conclusion of the Korean War.[4]
