I would go further and say that we should have put most of our resources and energy in Afghanistan, stayed there in force, and never invaded Iraq. IOW, we should have kept the Iranian/Shiite genie in the bottle as long as possible. The WMD issue, as is widely understood, was shamefully trumped up as an excuse to invade. No planning or forethought accompanied the invasion.
W's father understood the national and regional risks involved in taking out Saddam, and wisely chose to keep him bottled up (remember the "no fly zones" and the tight restrictions on Iraqi oil sales?) rather than unleash the forces of sectarian hatred and risk bringing Iran into play.
The very things the father strived to avoid, the son has rashly brought to pass.
