That is very true.
He was murdered (shot) by an "unknown assailant," on Oct 1, 1975.

One last comment on his style. He hit the snare with such a deep, penetrating, thud-like sound, that the brothers in Jamaica, listening to his records thought that he was playing the kick drum on the two and four (back beats). That's why the early reggae recordings HAD the kick ON the two and the four, and they used the snare drum rim for accents "second lining" around the sound of the bass and kick drum.
