Chimpanzees are smart and incredibly strong.
From the people I knew decades ago at the zoo who were the primate division including the chimp show, they said that the chimps could be loving and brilliant but would never have one for a pet because even back then they said no matter how friendly they were to you, they could turn in an instant and wipe your face off your skull.
I do know and recall a couple of attacks in the back holding areas to the primate keepers. No major injuries, but this is not shared with the public back then. Not so much for bad press, it was they didn't think it was that big a deal then. Times have changed. I think any wild animal has this potential. Don't go near the hippos. And I've been in the Africa area pulling people out of the exhibit after they fell in who were getting attacked by ostriches. Those suckers are fast.
While in the back next to the ape holding, the main great ape took my white pith helmet right off my head and crushed into small bits while looking straight at me. They didn't like white hats as some workers think it reminds them of the vet area. He wasn't talking.
