Since when does it take 5-6 months for underwriting? Never heard of such a thing.

Wait for closing? A very broad statement. Are they waiting for closing predicated on finding a lender. Have they come to an agreement with a lender and closing is in signature stage. Somewhere in between. Wait for closing would need definition for relevance.
