You're right. Those good ol' days are long gone in most places. That said there surely would still be places in America in which fathers and children are still able to enjoy what he and his father did.
He sounds like a very decent guy who was able to move from the right of political America to where he felt more naturally comfortable. Of course, his wife Sara's major part in his successful evolution should be fully understood and never forgotten.
