All he does is play games. Sure, he skillfully hijacked the Republican Party to further his personal ambitions, but what has he ever done for anyone else? Other than Putin? It's all games.
Republican legislators knew he wasn't going to get Mexico to pay for a wall, knew the intelligence agencies were right about the Russian influence, knew that there was an out of control bull in a china shop. Who had no ambition beyond self enrichment.
Maybe some Republicans also understood that he would trash US standing in the world and try to thwart the democratic process at home. Some things transcend party.
