You got that right. Although it is not life threatening like the Covid variants, it is, nonetheless, highly contagious. I wouldn't want to contract it.
In my research about Covid I was directed to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 2018-2020, which, the official estimate is still up for grabs, killed anywhere from 20 to 50 million people.
What is interesting about it is some epidemiologists believe the greater weight of the evidence suggests the virus was originally contracted by soldiers stationed in Ft. Levinworth, Kansas from cows or pigs that jumped off onto them. They took the virus with them to Europe in WWI.
Even then, the Big Blue Marble was a highly interconnected place. All we had then in terms of the global blockchain were ocean going ships. But that was enough to cause the spread. Since global war requires lots of resources for the purpose of human beings to kill other human beings, the virus spread just about anywhere. I am not sure even the Eskimos were spared.
Meanwhile, if the rate of infections continues to increase, which, my guess, it will, there will be the social media response by the anit-vax Qanon whackos that the vaccine already in existence for smallpox, which is also highly effective for the monkeypox, will kill you.
The whackos will come up with goodness knows what as an alternative, for the sole purpose, of course, of making a lot of many millions of American dollars off the naive and the downright stupid.
It goes without saying the supply of the monkey pox virus vaccine is currently way under what it would take to vaccinate the some 8 billion humans on this Big Blue Marble.
Vaccines became available where I live in Mecklenburg County North Carolina by the county health department, by appointment only. The requests for vaccines were exhausted in less than one hour.
As of this date, the health department has reported 12 cases, versus a county wide population of 2 million. That is like placing a grain of sand next to a beach ball.
But, as Al Einstein once said, the most powerful thing in the universe is compound interest.
