In california public schools, they teach about it in the third grade. They make a point to say its okay to be different, and they go a little deep into it. I think it was part of bullying prevention.
My grandson wanted to talk about it after he had the class, he seemed a little distressed but said "but I don't want to be a girl, so I don't have to" and that was the last time it ever came up. He got the take-home message, but he didn't really get what they were talking about, hell, if I got that talk as a nine year old I probably would have just laughed and that would have been the end of it.
