I see marketing and advertising more as an inevitable part of the human environment we have created.

Then, you have been sold a bill of goods and should resist ;).
One which i, to a very large extent, ignore most all of the time.
Would you ignore a mugging or preventable accident?..

Do you think it a fair fight where society allows powerful corps to employ
Armies of Lawyers and Marketers
Billions of dollars
To pry open simple minds, civil institutions, etc,.. ?

Just another way of saying one has to be vigilant to use their critical thinking skills
Being bombarded u may be shell shocked ;).
