Business Daily Update - Feb. 08, 2007

Novartis sees China as an increasingly important market for its hepatitis drugs, said Novartis chairman and CEO Daniel Vasella. "We will be launching a product for hepatitis B this year as it is a prevalent disease in China, with about 20 million people infected. We have been growing over 20 percent on average in the past five years and we have gained considerable market share," said Vasella. He said China's total pharmaceutical sector should grow to about 25 billion US dollars in 2010 from around 12 billion now. Swiss-based Novartis, the world's fourth largest pharmaceutical firm, recently announced it would invest about 100 million US dollars in R&D in China, with no specific timeframe provided.
