I think it was about context. It was the time when Motown was featuring Black singing groups that the Righteous Brothers did sound like.

And I'm guessing from how they got their moniker a lot of Black listeners thought the same thing.

According to Medley, they then adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers".

[12] At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them.[12][13]
