April 13 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry said on Wednesday that 1,026 soldiers of Ukraine's 36th Marine Brigade, including 162 officers, had surrendered in the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.

Mariupol, which has been encircled by Russian troops for weeks, has seen the fiercest fighting and the most comprehensive destruction since Russia invaded on Feb. 24

B402, His stated immediate security concern is NATO on his border. Or NATO having missiles pointing at him in countries bordering Russia. Right? You are saying then that security concern of his is the reason keeping NATO from taking Ukraine in as a member. Right? If i that correct, that is exactly the breathing room spoken about here

Putin’s War in Ukraine Is a Watershed. Time for America to Get Real.
[...]
What, then, is the path forward? The war in Ukraine now confronts the United States with the need to tilt back toward the practice of realpolitik. Washington’s commitment to keeping NATO’s doors open to Ukraine was a laudable and principled stand against an autocratic Russia. Yet America’s idealist cause has run headlong into Russian tanks; Washington’s effort to do right by Ukraine has culminated in Russia’s ruthless effort to put the country back under Moscow’s sway.
[...]
It’s true that Moscow’s dismay at the prospect of Ukraine’s membership in NATO most likely is fed in part by nostalgia for the geopolitical heft of the Soviet days, Mr. Putin’s paranoia about a “color revolution” arising in Russia, and mystical delusions about unbreakable civilizational links between Russia and Ukraine. But it is also true that the West erred in dismissing Russia’s legitimate security concerns about NATO setting up shop on the other side of its 1,000-mile-plus border with Ukraine

which has always been the position you have been poo-pooing as the West kowtowing to Putin threats.

Uh his security concerns keep neighbors from addressing theirs and then, Ukraine..
Pretty convenient for Putin....And a backwards logic
The aggressors keeps his target from protecting themselves...Worked Damn well too I might add......Ask Zelensky just how well...
I hope Finland and a Sweden Join NATO with their Middle finger raised high and proud, right in Putin's face......
(Strange timing me catching that subject on Maddow's show)

Again in your hoping about what Finland and Sweden will do you are looking at a complex situation in a very simplistic way.

Better to leave the decision to those who understand the complexities of the situation in much deeper depth than any of us do.

My impulse is also as yours, still in understanding there would be other consideration i'm unaware of i'm gonna leave that decision to them.

PS: Note to all others, i would appreciate any feedback regarding my position here too. Gotta run now.
