#3638 RE: striaterminalis #3637

OT: By any standard, I am early on the learning curve, but I respect the culture and enjoy the milieu--the locals here started to learn to surf before they were teens, I started surfing at 50. I tend to surf in Cardiff, down the beach and a respectful distance from those who can handle Swami's, and I make a pronounced effort to not get in the way of those who know what they are doing. North County tends to be a bit more tolerant of 'newbies' and less territorial--if I were to show up at Windansea, it would be about ten minutes before someone would suggest that it would be best if I departed.

For those not yet bored by this off-topic tangent, here is an illustration of how the culture here is shaped by the ocean and the surf. Last winter there was a day that unusually huge waves came in on the Pacific, 20 plus feet, a size of swell almost never seen in SoCal. It was too dangerous even for most experts to be in the water--but thousands of people drove down to the coast, from all over Southern California, clogging the highways as they made their way to the sea. They stood silently on the roadsides, watching these huge waves roll in, holding their young children up on their shoulders so that they could bear witness to the sheer majesty of it all. It was like watching a tribal gathering, a silent communion with the ocean. Perhaps it sounds trite in the telling, but as a newcomer to this area, I can say that it was a very striking experience to be here, and to be part of it.

OK--now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
