French law hasn't changed.
The US still has a basic English common law. Except for Louisiana, but since English law is French originally, close enough.
Putin is not different than the old Soviet despots, who were no different than the Czars. Russia is still basically Russia.
China is still China as well.
Haiti is different. It's actually the only successful slave revolt ever, I believe. But they started from scratch, and they're a failed state
