Well they must have figured it out as they have granite vases that could not be cut with their primitive tools. Obviously glass can withstand higher heat and forms could have been made out of glass as they also solved the Solar problem. That could certainly explain the smooth outside. Of course I cannot explain how they could reuse the form as they did with the concrete forms.
