SLNH fwiw I don’t think crypto is what is interesting here.

If you notice the PR today they mention something besides crypto

“so that we could focus on being a pure play green computing, zero-carbon computing and cryptocurrency mining company.”

That green computing is what is compelling. If you consider crypto rigs they are ASIC’s. (Application specific integrated circuit)

They are designed at the hardware level
to do one thing and only one thing, mine specific cryptocurrency.

That is different from GPU’s that can execute any software.

If you listen to Toporek they are not buying GPUs right now because they are expensive and crypto rigs have better ROI today.

The strategic direction is GPU’s. So what do you use GPU’s for? Huge distributed computing jobs for example machine learning work. Companies are paying Amazon premium prices for time on AWS.

When you pay Amazon you are paying premiums for things like 100% uptime. I think the idea here is they offer cloud computing at a fraction of the cost of say AWS, which works because their data centers are an order of magnitude cheaper being modular and not having the 100% uptime requirements of something backing an e-commerce site. In addition because they are buying stranded power their electricity costs are also way less.

That may not make sense if I’m running a website, but if I have a bunch of data scientists who need to churn through 100 terabytes of data and give me a result sometime tomorrow, and I can do it for half the price it’s a no brainer.

They haven’t provided much detail about that green computing business, but I can envision a model where they offer an AWS like interface for certain computing work, but charge much less.

Given John Belizaire is a software guy who sold his business to guidewire I think it’s a plausible direction.

If that is in fact the direction they become a cloud computing competitor to AWS, Azure, and google providing high margin discounted computing that is 100% green and actually makes alternative energy more economically viable because they will allow monetization of power that would otherwise go to waste.

I think that business gets a big premium, and double bonus you aren’t dependent on the long term viability of crypto to make money.
