I think they want to put down any opposition, and as fast as possible, without ongoing conflict. Having a viable rebel force is their biggest threat. They are there for power, not continuous internal conflict. Take Putin, for example. His political adversaries tend to die unnatural deaths. There is no middle in an autocratic regime. Their way or the highway.
