Swallowing propaganda.

Uh huh. No doubt at the tender age of 16 I failed to recognize the insidious reverse psychology they were drowning me with. Damn,
I thought they were absolutely sincere when we told of the 'red menace.' Dupes that we were, planing bomb shelters and stocking
canned goods when we found out Cuba had those nasty Russians and things off of Fl.
So all the time, they were trying to convince me that communism wouldn't work. Damn them to hell, they succeeded.

Exactly. Propaganda succeeded in making you think that you came up with the idea yourself, through a critical thinking process. You presented it here as being something you considered subversive 'you were laughed at for saying it'. The most effective propaganda is the stuff that makes you believe *you* thought of it. If the only manipulation is overt, talking about the 'red menace' and such, that leaves the possibilily of free thought still happening and second-guessing it. The second-guessing mechanism has to be directed too. Now do you at least see what I'm getting at? (It's find with me if you disagree, I'm still just trying to explain my initial statements.)

***************************************************************Although it is increasingly unnecessary, the human species still views life as
competitive. According to this mindset, my lifestyle can only get better if someone, somewhere, loses a level in theirs.

Let's see, if I show up at work, apply myself and get promoted with commensurate salary for my skills that means that somewhere
someone gets demoted and their salary slashed? Who knew?

Well, yes, and most people knew. Basic business: cost goes up, price rates go up. If one department grows out of their budget, either another department has to downsize to compensate, or the company has to get more money out of whoever the paying customer is. There is a finite amount of money moving through the economy, and the more you have, the less other people have at any given moment (it's the same basic concept as conservation of mass and energy)

You are asking for a cultural and intellectual rebirth of a world that only 100 years ago was riding into town on the back a jackass.
And not too many years before that they tying people to stakes and burning them. Or shooting them in a square in Beijing.

No, I'm not asking for it. I keep repeating that I'm not asking for it. But thanks for backing up a point that another poster has been slamming me for: that society has changed. I'm saying that I think it is evolving, growing up; if very slowly to our minds. The things that we say are always going to be because they are 'human nature' are really just like a childish phase. A phase that isn't going to end suddenly, soon, or with revolution, really. (Unless you use the term as in 'Industrial Revolution'.)
