HOCKEY: Nigerian teams locked out of the show

Nigeria’s Union Bank and Heartland hockey teams risk a two year ban from international hockey and a fine of up to Sh600,000 after failing to arrive on time for the ongoing Africa Cup of Clubs championship in Nairobi.

The African Hockey Federation will convene their congress in Nairobi in July during the Africa Olympic qualifier championship.

The two sides failed to show up and Africa Cup of Clubs tournament director Richard Akpokavie of Ghana officially locked them out of the championship. The order was issued despite the two sides sending communication they would arrive last night.

“The wait is over, they had over six months to prepare and come to this championship. They cannot convince us otherwise. Even if they come they will only be spectators because we will not include them in the fixtures,” said Akpokavie.

Already the AHF secretariat in Cairo, Egypt has communicated to the Nigerian hockey federation indicating the decision to lock out the two sides. Union Bank are the men’s league champions in Nigeria. Heartland are the women’s champions.

They are not expected to play domestic hockey until the decision on their case is determined.

The withdrawal of the two sides has forced organisers of the continental fiesta to reschedule matches and draw fresh fixtures for the remaining teams.

The women’s side will see all the four clubs play in a round robin format with the top two meeting in the finals while the last two will meet in a third and fourth place play off.

The league format will be retaining in the men’s category with teams divided into two groups. Pool “A” has defending champions Sharkia, Kenya Police, Delta Flickers and Marine Sticks while Pool “B” has only three sides Police Union, Armed Forces and Golden Sticks.

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) secretary general Peter Kiruma has allayed fears that the standard of the championship was compromised by the scratching of the Nigerian sides.

He said the remaining clubs have what it takes and promised fans the best hockey on the City Park stadium which is hosting its first international championship after undergoing renovation and installation of an Aden Grand ultra turf.

AHF president Seif Ahmed from Egypt and treasurer Clare Dibgy are in Nairobi for the championship.
