You're probably right, many will just accept the vaccine as it's not really worth losing any of the years they worked on the force.
The logic from the officers themselves could not make any sense that isn't laughable considering they took an oath to protect and serve and that also means to keep themselves and co-workers safe. So the unions were introduced for them. The unions don't belong at the table.
But I'm trying to look at it from an officers perspective and there's just no way that I can, it's too idiotic. They're not burger flippers or candy vendors, they're public servants. They are on the streets in peril all day handling miscreants a large part of the day. People spitting on them, fighting with them, and then there's the criminals too.
But I hope the threats will not be acted upon because I also believe the pandemic is transitory and penalty of being fired and losing everything for a bad decision like this may be unfair. But the other side of the coin is an officer can lose everything for action unbecoming of a police officer while on duty such as dui, duty time cheating, or using the patrol unit as a sex mobile. But still they can lose the job and benefits forever. And not even talking about action against citizens. So, if it's an accepted fact that going into the public without a vaccine can endanger the public and partners, then perhaps getting fired could be justified by the city and public. I think they should be laid off without pay with a reasonable time to accept a vaccine, and then after that grace period, they should accept that they could lose their job and pension.
It's a difficult position all around. I know from being there that other vaccines are mandatory and they don't complain, including free Hepatitis shots as well. They never refuse those. I just don't see how a covid vaccine is any different.
