Apple CEO Tim Cook to meet with EU competition chief Vestager in New York City
Friday, October 1, 2021 5:01 pm

Apple CEO Tim Cook is in New York City on Friday for a meeting with Margrethe Vestager, the European Commissioner for Competition, MacRumors reports, citing “a person familiar with the matter.”

In July, Vestager warned Apple against using privacy and security concerns to fend off App Store competition, reasons CEO Tim Cook has cited against the sideloading of apps from outside the App Store.

Joe Rossignol for MacRumors:

Vestager was a keynote speaker at Fordham University’s annual Conference on International Antitrust Law and Policy earlier [Friday].

It’s unclear when Cook and Vestager are scheduled to meet or what topics will be on the agenda. In April, the European Commission informed Apple of its preliminary view that it abused its dominant position for the distribution of music streaming apps through the App Store by charging high commission fees on Apple Music rivals like Spotify, which had filed a complaint against Apple with the European Commission in 2019.

Following his trip to New York, Cook is reportedly scheduled to speak at the Silicon Slopes Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 13, and he will headline a fundraising dinner on the same day.

MacDailyNews Note: While in New York, Tim Cook also visited Apple Store SoHo on Friday morning:

Apple boosts iPhone 13 A15 Bionic chip orders, reduces orders for older iPhone chips
Monday, October 4, 2021 8:39 am

DigiTimes on Monday reports that, even in the face of a global chip shortage, Apple is ramping up A15 Bionic chip orders for the new iPhone 13 lineup while reducing equivalent orders for older-generation iPhone models still on the market.

DigiTimes:

Apple has scaled down its chip orders for older-generation iPhones, while ramping up wafer starts at TSMC for its iPhone 13, the sources said. Apple has also not made any changes to its chip orders placed with TSMC for 2021, the sources noted.

Tim Hardwick for MacRumors:

According to today’s report, TSMC is still on track to move its 3nm process technology to volume production in the second half of 2022, with monthly output for the process set to reach 55,000 wafers. TSMC’s 3nm process will reportedly be first adopted for the manufacture of ?iPhone? chips. A previous report from Nikkei Asia claimed Apple will debut the next-generation 3nm chip technology in a 2022 iPad Pro.

The A15 Bionic chip in the ?iPhone 13? uses a 5nm+ process, which TSMC refers to as N5P, a “performance-enhanced version” of its 5nm process that delivers additional power efficiency and performance improvements. The A16 chip in 2022 iPhones is expected to be manufactured based on TSMC’s future 4nm process.

MacDailyNews Take: When we hit 3nm, even when we go to 4nm next year, battery life is going to be insanely great, especially with ProMotion displays!
