For example, if you put in a sell order for 1000 shares at .10, then there must be a buy order for exactly 1000 shares at .10 in order for your trade to execute.

Not quite: if you put in a sell order for 1000 shares at .10, it could also be matched by two buy orders for 500 shares at .10, and so on.
