I used to chase them, too, to try to help stop them. The fire is far from over, it is almost half a million acres now, I have several friends from greenville, it is a cool old mountain prospector town.
They did some bad karma a few years ago by filling in the natural hot spring there with a backhoe after a guy passed out in it and got cooked. Destroying natural hot springs is something I have never seen a liberal do, the conservative cowboys have screwed a lot of them up by filling them with tangles of old barbed wire "to keep calves from falling in".
Not even going to get into the fire debate with anyone this year, as I was a forester and did fires every year, but tempers are hot over this one. My firefighter friends tell me that some of the t**** types refused to evacuate, so the firefighters had to spend their time saving their fucking worthless lives instead of being able to focus on structure protection for the town.
