SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A federal jury ruled Friday that Broadcom Corp. did not infringe on two of rival semiconductor maker Qualcomm Inc.'s patents for video compression technology, Broadcom said.
The nine-day trial, the latest turn in a long-running legal battle between the two companies included testimony from both chairmen, Broadcom's Henry Samueli and Qualcomm's Irwin Jacobs.
Lou Lipin, Qualcomm's general counsel, told the San Diego Union-Tribune the company was disappointed with the verdict and had not decided whether to appeal. Qualcomm representatives did not immediately return phone messages from The Associated Press.
The verdict comes amid a fierce attack against Qualcomm's business model by Broadcom, Nokia Corp. and other wireless equipment makers who say Qualcomm charges excessive royalties for rights to its patented inventions.
Qualcomm accused Broadcom of violating two patents for the compressing of video signals -- technology that is used in DVD players, digital televisions and iPod music players.
"We are obviously very pleased and very grateful for this jury's diligence in working to arrive at the truth, even when presented with some very complex and intricate engineering testimony," said David Dull, Broadcom's general counsel.
Qualcomm has filed numerous lawsuits that accuse Broadcom of infringing on a combined 10 patents and misappropriating trade secrets. Broadcom has filed lawsuits that accuse Qualcomm of violating a total of 18 patents, and is one of six companies that has asked the European Commission to investigate Qualcomm's business practices.
A federal judge in New Jersey recently dismissed Broadcom's antitrust lawsuit against Qualcomm, a ruling Broadcom is appealing.
Qualcomm, based in San Diego, is best known as a pioneer of a wireless standard known as code-division multiple access, or CDMA, which runs about 20 percent of the world's cell phones. Broadcom, based in Irvine, is a relative newcomer to the cell phone business.
