It is absolutely not meaningless - it is a tool, made available for a reason - it permits insight into what is actually going on during the trading day/week/month -
short "interest" is completely different and merely refers to the end result of reported carried shorting after market close - at just a specific moment in time - which is generally not accurately reported for OTC stocks
