You may indeed own synthetic shares but it doesn’t matter all shares will have to be bought back. It’s up to the DTCC to sort though them and find the fake ones.

We all own shares. Whether they are real or counterfeit doesn't matter when we sell. When the DTCC fires up the computers to buy back the counterfeit shares we get our price.
