The conceptual use of lies is an attempt to break down the fabric and take control of the shared reality. Most consider that shared reality is the truth or the facts of the truth acceptable to all who are playing by the same rule book.
A lie is an attempt to change the perception (or perceived image) of the liar, to make the ego flattered or simply put; to make the liar seem bigger better smarter cleverer richer etc etc.
In fact a lie will be halfway around the world before the truth has its pants on!
A pathological lie is told by someone who lies compulsively and usually without any clear benefit. Pathological liars often can't seem to tell truth from lies and may contradict themselves when examined or questioned.
