FWIW, at least one of my Grandfathers was a Freemason. I only ever heard my Dad mention it a few times. Wish I would have asked more about it.

I grew up doing the St. Jude bike-a-thons every year to raise money for little kids with diseases. My Grandfather's best friend was Danny Thomas, who founded St. Jude's, and was 33rd degree Freemason:

Polio wasn't necessarily a death sentence. But it was still devastating to it's victims. I'm old enough to remember classmates and fellow Boy Scouts who needed leg braces and those metal crutches that had the handles down the side and the metal cuff that clasped their forearms when weight was applied to the handles.

"Franklin Roosevelt founds March of Dimes" Roosevelt may have had a personal motivation? Do some research...
