You have a good point. Children raised in difficult situations may not be stupid, they might be tightly focussed on something other than getting a good grade. This tight focus on a bad situation may not help in the long run.
In terms of musicians, I've heard that beta-blockers can help prevent performance anxiety, but this all goes back to who can afford what and get legitimate drugs prescribed off-label, so is probably off topic here.
