The big question is how did it originate in the US at an isolated army camp in Fort Riley, Kansas? Or did it? Public health reporting in 1918 does not compare to today's standards.

You're relying on a study from a Canadian in 2014. There have been many studies about this and while no one will ever be sure many studies point to outside Fort Riley.
