When I first started working in the pharmaceutical business a few years back after being downsized by a major chemical
company after 20 years in R&D I had the opportunity to interview for a startup company which delt with finding new drugs from plants. Everything from weeds to exotics. Even back then I knew about Cytogenix and thought that if there were truly cures out there, that they would come from genetic breakthroughs.
Chemical means of treatment was/is getting way too expensive every year. This was true of chemicals in crop protection and surely must be true of chemicals in the pharmaceutical industry.
Screens to find chemicals active in shutting down or triggering responses are time consuming. Thousands upon
thousands of chemical compounds may be screened, most times without one "hit".
The other aspect of chemical treatment is the risk associated with side effects and potential longterm damage to vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, not to mention others.
So to make this already long post short, I told them I was not really interested in their position. For the money they offered and benefits they did not I felt it was not worth
working for a company whose technology I did not believe in.
Chemicals to me have their limited uses, and seem to me to be a stoneage answer to many medical problems often causing more longterm harm than good. Saw the results first hand with father. Yes, they did help prolong his life, but the quality of life was not so good.
And as I left that interview after listening to these smug
PHDs tell me how they were going to re-invent the wheel I thought to myself.........
if they only knew about the company that I knew about, maybe they wouldn't be so arrogant.
