From fuagf's article, it would appear she's a black Chicagoan. I imagine she might know 34 people who died of COVID, probably all black.
One thing to be careful of, Zorax, is the definition of "friend." I don't assume that other people mean what I mean when I use it. We all use that word differently and, speaking for myself, differently in context.
Her "friends," especially in the context of social activism, might include people she knows of but doesn't know personally. Or they may be internet "friends" she's met on social media sites. In one context, I might call y'all my "friends." In another, I'm likely to say, "Hell, I don't know any of those people really."
(That said, I did once advise my husband not to get too close to his boss who, sadly, seemed to go to a lot of funerals for "friends.")
