I’m as distrustful of Krugman as you are, but data are data! It’s hard to argue that healthcare per capita in the U.S. ought to cost 2x what it does in France or Canada when the U.S has no advantage in longevity.
I understand that some of the added healthcare cost in the U.S. goes to fund innovation, but drugs are only 15% of U.S. healthcare outlays, so clearly innovation by itself does not account for the wide disparity in healthcare costs relative to other first-world countries.
