"This Is Not America" is a song by English singer David Bowie and American jazz fusion band Pat Metheny Group, taken from the soundtrack to the 1985 film The Falcon and the Snowman.[1] It was released as a single in February 1985, reaching number 14 in the United Kingdom and number 32 in the United States. The instrumental song that "This Is Not America" is based on, was written by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays and is itself a song called "Chris", which was also included on the soundtrack for the film.
The song appeared on The Singles Collection (1993). Later it was also released on Best of Bowie (2002), appearing on all but the Australian and Japanese pressings of that album. Metheny later noted that Bowie's words were "profound and meaningful—and absolutely perfect for the film."[2] “This Is Not America”: David Bowie’s somber Reagan-era movie theme was one of the greatest protest songs ever
“A little piece of you, the little peace in me…will die…” sings David Bowie in “This Is Not America,” the theme song for John Schlesinger’s 1985 Cold War spy film The Falcon and the Snowman.
The video for the song, constructed from scenes from the movie, can be seen in our “New Film and Video” episode, which originally aired on “Night Flight” on April 12, 1985, just a few months after the movie opened in U.S. theaters (and President Ronald Reagan had been elected to his second term, too).
