There is nothing mysterious about the ex-date.

Transactions today will settle before the opening of business on January 2 (the record date), and the new owner will receive the dividend. Transactions tomorrow (the ex-date) will not settle until January 3, and the old owner, not the new, will receive the dividend. Only trading days count in calculating the settlement date.
