I'm no bench scientist but establishing a good in vitro model to assay antivirals is I think not easy at all vs just using cell lines that have been tried and tested to be very good that just that, they are readily available and probably already labs have these cells in house, so it makes perfect sense to *start* with these in vitro models IMO
