Trump has been divider-in-chief since he came to office. Trump, as he trumpets his 'law and order'
reelection stance, believes social unrest will boost his, stay out of jail, reelection chances.

"DOJ Inspector General Investigating Federal Agents' Actions In Portland And D.C."

That's good news.

"The mayors of at least five cities, including Portland and Washington, sent a letter to
President Trump this week asking him to withdraw the agents, saying they were inflaming tensions."

Trump on seeing that letter, or if only told of it as seems more likely,
would likely at least think something like, "That's great, I'm doing good."

That will likely change as November nears, just as his position on everything around the virus has.

Aside: Just as your post came in Australian ABC News 24 started an item on the Portland unrest. Yup, Trump
is still getting more frequent coverage on overseas news than any other American president in history.

I'm guessing throughout 2021 citizen Trump will get more coverage than any other former president in history, until he goes to jail.

If justice serves better than he has, that is.

The United Nations human rights office has issued a stark warning to authorities in the US against using disproportional force against protesters and journalists involved in anti-systemic racism protests across the country.

The UN called on authorities to specifically ensure federal and local police were clearly identifiable, after images emerged of officers hiding their badge numbers when using force against protesters.

"There have been reports that peaceful protesters have been detained by unidentified police officers," said Liz Throssell, UN human rights spokesperson.

"That is a worry because it may place those detained outside
the protection of the law and may give rise to arbitrary
detention and other human rights violations."


Black mourning bands are often worn across the tops of badges to honour fallen police. Officers said they wore
them for those who had died from COVID-19, though in some cases the bands obstructed the badge number.

The Black Lives Matter movement, rekindled in May after the murder of unarmed black man George Floyd by Minneapolis police, saw protests against systemic racism held across the world. Police used riot dispersion techniques to disperse the largely peaceful protests, including in Australia.

The city of Portland, Oregon has become a flashpoint for flare-ups between protesters and authorities, so much so that a federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order against federal law enforcement, barring them from using force against journalists and legal observers in Portland.

Under the law, the Federal Government has the authority to protect federal buildings and property, though some analysts see it as a mark of Mr Trump's campaign strategy of cracking down on law and order.

On Wednesday night, Mayor Ted Wheeler was among those tear-gassed by police. He called it an abuse of federal power that was escalating the violence.

The US Justice Department said it would investigate the incident.

A lawsuit has also been filed on behalf of journalists whom federal agents had hit with non-lethal "impact munitions."

Police in Chicago have also been accused of excessive force after using their batons against demonstrators who threw frozen water bottles, fireworks and other projectiles at officers.

The Chicago protests targeted the statue of Christopher Columbus, which was officially removed from its pedestal in Grant Park on Friday morning.

Violence also erupted in Denver after Black Lives Matter protesters clashed with supporters of police.

Police said they used pepper balls and pepper spray to disperse the larger Black Lives Matter contingent.
