The only difference is that in the US you must first borrow the shares. If they aren't available to borrow from your broker you cannot place the order. In Canada you must be able to place the short order without any worry of borrowing the shares. Not sure if the uptick rule comes into play for the naked short or if the sell order must be marked as SS or its just a regular sell order.
