I won't spend any time trying to refute your teachers since I don't know what they said but if you try a google search for full moon effect I think you'll find little to support your assertion. Mostly biased researchers and bad statisticians.
As to the term "lunatic", it probably derives from the same folklore that produced werewolf and vampire.
