They won't get a writeoff because they will never sell. They will die and their heirs will get a worthless stock. That is an interesting point I never really investigated. If you inherit a garbage stock then sell it, what is your cost basis, zero? That would be a kick in the pants. You inherit Blue's stock worth $200 that he paid over $400k, then you have to pay tax. Pretty funny if you think about it.
