In both of your cited cases all shareholders of commons were wiped out and brand new shares were reissued. While it's not impossible for commons to be saved in a chapter 11 it certainly is very rare. When it's in a company's best interest to cancel commons, and it almost always is in these cases, you better believe they will. They don't give a damn.
