I do understand that. Your patronising tone isn't much appreciated, but hey, what's a message board without smugness?
To put it into context, during the swine flu blitz, people in my city were told to wear masks, get tested, stay home from work (amongst other interventions). This lasted about 2 weeks. The medical system couldn't handle the onslaught of doctor visits and requests for tests. The advice was quickly changed to the same advice one would get for most flu-like viruses: stay home, rest, hydrate, but above all DON'T COME TO YOUR GPs OFFICE because we need the time and space to treat the vulnerable elements of the population such as the elderly and those people with pre-existing conditions.
Today, 20000 people phoned the newly established covid hotline requesting a test (I'm in Australia). It's likely that in addition to a large psychosomatic run, many of the people who most needed to make that call were unable to because the need a carer to assist them do so. Hence, much expenditure in human and other capital is being directed where it is least needed.
The days of small pox wiping out indigenous civilisations are over. We live in a new Gwandana, where viruses travel as freely as goods and people. If people were breaking out in boils and bleeding from the eyeballs before dying within hours, quarantine would be the only possible option, but this level of viral infection can do much greater harm through sowing panic and mania if the public freaks out like they have with frickin toilet paper! What's needed now is calm, strong leadership that can frame this virus within the context that it merits.
