It has accomplished 2 things. Turkey is now responsible for the burden of fighting in Syria against Assad, Russia and Iran. That being said, it is also driving a wedge between Turkey, Russia (and Iran, an ally of Russia). Pretty shrewd move by Trump if you ask me.
